6 Secrets to Stop Breaking Off Your Natural Hair

No one likes split ends. But you know what’s worse? Having to chop your hair when the breakage gets the best of you. To reach your length goals, you have to keep your strands strong and growing. Whether you’re natural or relaxed, keep these healthy-hair tips top of mind.

Focus on moisture

Keeping your hair moisturized is the best way to minimize breakage. Moisturized hair is soft, flexible, and strong. Banish dryness by finding the best conditioners and creams for your hair type and porosity. (A stylist can help you figure this out.)

Chill on the heat

The less heat you use, the healthier your hair will be. But if you don’t want to give up heat entirely, use the lowest temperature on your flatiron necessary for your desired look (we’re talking 350 – low 400s °F max) and never skip heat protectant.

Don’t touch

Low manipulation/protective styling gives your hair (and you) the much-needed break from styling that can put too much stress on your strands. Choose a style that lasts several weeks, and watch your hair flourish!

Avoid product build up

We love our products. But build up on the hair and scalp can weaken your hair and make breakage more likely. When moisturizers, oils, and co-washes are part of your regimen, add in a clarifying shampoo when your hair and scalp need a deep clean.

Sleep smart

Silk scarfs, bonnets, and silk or satin pillowcases are your friend. Keep your hair moisturized and unbothered through the night by keeping your hair wrapped up and away from moisture-leeching cotton.

Trim regularly

Holding on to split and jagged ends as a way to retain length is a losing game. The more your ends split, the more you’ll ultimately need to cut. Get a trim every few months or at the first sign of breakage. Your hair will be better for it.
