The Best Hair Colors for Dark Skin Tones

By Kait Joplin

Don’t let the title of this post fool you. What we’re not going to do in 2020 is tell you which colors you can and can’t rock with a dark skin tone. Why? Because there isn’t a color that’s off limits when applied correctly on healthy hair. Some may want to take into account choosing the perfect hair color for the season or undertones, but it’s truly up to you. Though the options are limitless, here are our six favorite hair colors that look amazing on dark skin to inspire you:

BURGUNDY

The richness of brown skin gives burgundy hair depth and it looks beautiful in any style, from braids to twist outs.

BROWN

If brown is your natural hair color, congrats— you can literally do nothing to your color and look amazing. However, if you’re itching for a subtle change going to a darker brown will add depth. Or, adding lighter brown highlights could be just the pop of color you’re looking for. No matter what, brown is a classic look.

BLONDE

Blonde on dark skin is always a win. If you’re hesitant about bleaching your hair (we get it; it’s a huge commitment!), wigs and two-tone braids or twists are the perfect alternatives.

JET BLACK

Black is the new black. Always in and always looks amazing against brown skin. Win-win.

ROYAL BLUE

Go bold! This blue hue makes such a statement and looks great against brown skin. Lighter hues of blue would work as well, but this is one of our favorite looks.

PINK

Whether you go for hot pink or cotton candy, there’s something so lighthearted and fun about pink hair. Again, against brown skin? Perfection.

Ready to jump into a new color? Here’s what to expect:

  1. Find a Reputable Colorist. We can help with that. No matter how you go about choosing your stylist, make sure they can help you keep your hair healthy throughout the process, especially if you’re bleaching.
  2. Do a Consultation. A professional stylist should require a consultation before applying color to fully assess your hair’s history, health, and texture. Some will even do test swatches to see how your hair responds before tackling your whole head. This is a good idea to help you manage your expectations and make sure you’re getting exactly what you want.
  3. Prepare for High Maintenance. Maintaining color, especially when using bleach to go lighter, is a big commitment and takes a lot of work to keep your hair from breaking off. Never compromise the health of your hair for a different color. Make sure your strands are healthy enough first.
