Ask A Stylist: What’s the deal with protein treatments?

Stylists swear by protein treatments because the perfect balance between protein and moisture is key to healthy hair. Here’s what you need to know about protein treatments (odds are, it’s time to book one).

Why protein matters more than you might think

Protein is responsible for cell growth, including your hair, which is made of about 90% keratin- “the hair protein.” Similar to fitness, think of adequate protein as building hair muscle. Diet is the only way to ensure you’re getting the amount of protein you need, however protein treatments can strengthen/repair your strands on the outside!

Signs your hair may need more protein

Limp, breaking hair or hair that lacks elasticity may be in need of a protein treatment. Heat and chemicals from color and other processes can weaken the hair, and require regular protein to strengthen the strands! You could also try this strand test.

Signs you need less

Hair that has too much protein may feel stiff, brittle, and excessively shed. If this is your hair, implement more moisture.

Know your ingredients

When building your regimen it’s key to know what your products are made of so you can find your perfect balance. Other terms for protein include: keratin/hydrolyzed keratin, hydrolyzed oat flour, variations of hydrolyzed collagen, hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydrolyzed silk protein, and hydrolyzed soy protein

Products to consider

The amount of protein your hair needs and how often depends on the current health of your hair (a stylist can help you figure this out). Here are a few we love: Light: Mielle Organics Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner, Medium: Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair, Intense: Aphogee 2-Step Protein Treatment.
