12 Things Natural Hairstylists Wish Their Clients Knew

natural hair

We asked stylists in the Swivel community what they really wish their clients knew. Here’s what they told us:

“A trim and cut when done properly require the same process – therefore the same cost.” —Tina Pearson

“I wish clients knew the real real behind how hair grows. I wish they understood the biology & science behind it all. I wish there was cohesive belief that hair grows naturally and that the way you care for it is the primary factor in the retention of that growth rather than the products, concoctions or tools marketed to us daily. I wish they trusted us when we share that information.” —Sydney Proctor

“Consistency is needed to achieve healthy hair growth.” —Jeanne Maxwell

“When you bring in a picture of what you want done, as far as either color or haircut or style, it really depends on the texture, what shape your hair is in. Everyone’s hair is totally different. Nine times out of ten, the stylist may have to make some changes to what your hair needs to come close to what that picture looks like.” —Keisha Nelson

“I wish clients knew that the picture on social media of another person’s hair is cute and I can do something similar to the shape (if it’s a haircut you’re wanting) but it I can’t make it look exactly like the picture. Many times pictures have been edited, the model’s hair maybe denser (thicker) than yours and sometimes they may be wearing a weave or a wig or some other hair enhancements.” —Martha Howard

“Hair does not grow overnight!” —BeautiByVee

“I wish clients knew how hard we work to make sure they are beautiful.. from long hours, body pain and time away from our family to ensure they get the best possible service. We are so passionate about using our craft to service others that we extend all of ourselves to clients.” —Courtney Foster

“The majority of Youtubers don’t have any licenses and only know about their own hair through trial and error.” —Noel Reid-Killings

“I am as professional as any surgeon, supreme court justice, or executive, meaning I am as exact as any one of them. I am an expert at my salon’s services. I used the word precise in my opening statement, which describes my talents. I’ve been honored by certification as a hair specialist and assist people called to the stage to influence their lives.” —Stephen L. Smith

“Dirty hair does not make an updo better.” —Nadine Gumbs

“I wish all clients knew how to prep their hair before coming into the salon. Coming in with tangled and matted hair can set a stylist’s whole day back or worse you may be cancelled and still charged an inconvenience fee. Knowing this will save everyone time and money. ” —Telicia Farve

“Dry hair? Shampoo and condition more often! Waiting a month to shampoo is no good. Hydration evaporates from hair after about 7 to 10 days. Oils and butters only mask dryness. Water=hydration=wash yo hair!” —Regina Pearl
