What One Hairstylist & Hair Loss Expert Wants Women to Know About Hair Loss

By Courtney Foster

As a stylist, I hear about hair loss every day. Almost every client I see is concerned about some form of thinning, from a small spot in the crown to a large patch of missing hair from a weave install gone wrong. No matter how big or small, it’s always horrifying. I hope to ease these fears by sharing what I wish my clients knew about hair loss.

Shedding and Hair Loss Are Different

First, it’s very important that we differentiate alopecia from natural hair shedding. We shed up to 75-100 strands of hair per day and that’s completely normal. I typically ask clients to monitor their amount of shedding and only consult a professional if it becomes excessive. When it comes to removing braids, weaves, or crochet, you will definitely notice more shedding and hair fall, but don’t be alarmed! Remember, since your hair sheds 75-100 strands daily, your protective styling holds all that excess hair until you take it down.

Be Honest With Your Stylist

When you see your stylist, be prepared to answer a lot of questions. In order to identify your specific type of alopecia, I’m going to ask you a series of questions. Even though it may seem that I’m all up in your business, trust me, I am not trying to be nosy. These questions help us determine your specific type of alopecia and our best plan of action. I will ask about your family history and any stress or trauma in your life that may have contributed to your hair loss. Stress plays a huge part in your overall hair health. Your lifestyle, eating habits, and even water intake (make sure to stay hydrated!) can all affect your hair health and shedding. If you thought it couldn’t get more personal, I will even ask about your menstrual cycle. Believe it or not, your hormonal balance (or imbalance) also plays a role in hair loss. Don’t worry about feeling overwhelmed by these questions. Stylists operate from a place of love and never judgment. I know losing hair is stressful and can lead to a lack of confidence. However, I assure you that I (and my fellow cosmetologists) want the best outcome for you.

You don’t have to shave it all off!

A shaved head is not always the answer to alopecia and hair loss. With new advances in technology, medication, and transplants, there are more solutions now for hair loss than ever. Working with skilled cosmetologists, hair loss practitioners, trichologists, or dermatologists will help a client reach their goal in a variety of ways. From laser treatments to PRP transplants (taking active hair follicles and implanting them into dormant follicles) to innovative pills and topical creams, we’ll work as a team to find your perfect solution.

Don’t rush the process.

Hair loss can seem overwhelming and scary, but educating yourself will play a huge role in putting these fears at ease. I love when clients leave my chair with a sense of hope because they now have a partner for their journey ahead. And it will be a journey because hair fall restoration takes time. It will be a marathon, not a sprint and patience is of the utmost importance. Hair grows 1/2 inch per month, so results will not always come immediately. Unfortunately, I’ve seen clients completely give up because they didn’t get the automatic results they wanted. Please don’t let that be you! It will be worth the wait to see your hair growth in the end. To ensure you get those results, make sure to follow your hair loss treatment regimen every day. The results will come.

I hope these tips help give you a better understanding of hair loss so on your next visit to the hair salon, you have the confidence to know there is a solution for you.
