What are they: A keratin treatment is a temporary, chemical process that straightens hair and eradicates frizz for up to six months. Results will vary based on the method used by the stylist and the texture/density of your hair (in other words, everyone’s keratin treatment won’t look the same!).
Know before you go: Many keratin treatments contain formaldehyde (a known carcinogen) or chemicals that release formaldehyde gas when heated or mixed with water. You can opt for a formaldehyde-free version—just check with your stylist first. Also keep in mind that these are chemicals, so they will alter your curl pattern to some degree. You’ll definitely want to understand what the treatment will do to your hair when you’re done with your straight look. We always recommend a thorough consultation before any chemical service.
Make it last: Many stylists recommend that you opt for a sulfate-free shampoo and avoid salt water (and any hair products containing sodium chloride), which will cause the keratin to fade sooner than necessary.
